Coming this month to HBO will be Flight of the Conchords, a new comedy series that appears (to me) to be in the spirit of Extras, one of the best half-hour shows of this century. The show follows “New Zealand’s fourth most popular folk-parody duo”, who are Bret McKenzie of The Black Seeds and Figwit and Jemaine Clement of The Humourbeasts, as they try to make it big in The Big Apple. The show’s pedigree includes James Bobin, who wrote and directed on ‘Da Ali G Show’ — one of the funniest shows of last century — helping create the characters of ‘Ali G’, including Borat and Bruno.

The clips of Conchords that I’ve seen are pretty damn funny. Check out this Youtube clip.

If you’re too broke or too cheap to get HBO, you can win the first episode on DVD for free! In addition, Berkeley Place is giving away a Robot stress reliever, poster, T-shirt, and postcard of the show.

“What do I have to do to win?” you ask.

Just this: No later than June 8, drop me a comment or shoot me an e-mail with:

1. Your e-mail address.

2. The answer to this question: What is the funniest movie or TV show about musicians ever? (Like Spinal Tap, The Decline of Western Civilization Part 2: The Metal Years, Run’s House . . . Even Amadeus. Whatever you think is funny.

Make sure to check your e-mail on June 8 because if you’re the winner and you don’t get back to me with your mailing address within 24 hours of being notified, I reserve the right to pick another person.

Fine print: Winner will be selected at random. Friends and employees of Berkeley Place are encouraged to enter. Contest void wherever HBO’s people don’t want to send the prizepackage to, but I don’t know where that might be. I’m pretty sure it includes Mars, though. Odds of winning are pretty good, but the odds of losing are much greater.

I feel I must respond to the above comment. First, thank you for being nice about your complaint. I take this sites reputation very seriously. Now, to clarify: I do not receive any money from any of the labels or companies that submit material for review here, and believe me I get offers all the time. I also have been offered tons of material by major labelsmaterial that I have ended up buying in storesbut I reject it because we dont review material here by RIAA labels, who have made it clear that they do not want our help or support (except when it benefits them and then only under their terms).

However, I did run a contest giving away a CD by The Fields, and they are on a boutique of a major label. I also gave tickets away to a Kaiser Chiefs show. Now, were giving away some Conchords merchandise. We also gave away a Cartoon Network package. I do not consider give-aways to be reviews, and I do not post any mp3s or other material in a giveaway unless the material is hosted by the sponsor of the contest. Basically, I run these give-aways because I think my readers like free stuff. I dont hype the major labels here, and never will, but Im happy to pass their swag on to you, my readers. If they get some free publicity out of it, so be it.

That said, are there more of you who find this objectionable? Please drop some comments and let me know. If you don’t think it’s worth it, Ill stop. I don’t benefit at all from the give-aways (and frankly theyre kind of a pain in the butt to run), so if you all find them objectionable, lets just drop it.

I’m gonna have to say Spinal Tap. Also what size will the shirt be?

    Thanks, Jon.
