10 REASONS MY BLOG LIKES OTHER BLOGS

Posted: May 7, 2010 by dillion in Uncategorized

1. Captains Dead offers a great Husker Du concert from 1984, which includes their great tunes “8 Miles High” and “What’s Going On?”

2. Grammar humor. Gotta love, it.

3. An oldie but a goodie. Phantom Broadcast-The Go! Team. Get the entire Help! benefit album from emusic.

4. Smidgen of Ashen Fluff has a recent M.I.A. in-studio set, doing stuff from Kala. I must say, what I’ve heard from that album doesn’t knock me out at all. I liked Arular, but not a lot. This one doesn’t even appear to have a catchy single, like her first one did.

5. So Much Silence is a great blog that has been doing a series called, “I Used to Love H.E.R.” in which artists and bloggers write about their favorite hip hop album. Such a great idea. You should go check out Passion of the Weiss’ entry about GZA’s Liquid Swords, a true classic. If I were asked (which I’m sure I won’t be), I can’t imagine what album I’d pick. Maybe Public Enemy’s Nation of Millions, which was playing when I realized how compatible me and my wife were. (She knew all the words to the Flavor Flav jam on the record. Flav, you now officially suck wet farts out of rotting dead baby asses.) Or I might pick U.T.F.O.’s Roxanne Roxanne, ’cause I played it over and over while learning the fine art of wild style tagging. So many to choose from.

6. The great (Boot)log has a Weeping Tiles performance that includes their covers of Hey Ya! (OutKast) and Just What I Needed (The Cars).

7. XTina likes to be mashed by mashuppers.

DJBC’s Gaye Boyz (Marvin Gaye- I Heard It Through The Grapevine vs. 69 Boyz- How We Roll vs. Christina Aguilera- Ain’t No Other Man vs. Bubba Sparxxx feat. Yin Yang Twins- Miss New Booty vs. Chingy- Hands Up

DJ Ayr’s Sniff N’ The Tears – Driver’s Seat vs. Christina Aguilera – Ain’t No Other Man

8. And lucky us, she also likes being nekkid.

9. Y’all should check out BBC America’s Jekyll show. It’s hot.

10. Ryan posted a neat little tidbit about album leaks, which give all us honest bloggers a band name.

TOP 25 INDIE ALBUMS OF ALL TIME

Posted: April 14, 2010 by dillion in Uncategorized

Thanks to all who’ve e-mailed or commented with entries to the list.  Because this is a transparent, D.I.Y. blog, I need to clarify a few things and change it a little.  These are the amended rules:  If you’ve already submitted a list, you don’t have to submit again (but you can if you like).

1.  The album must have been released on an indie label. Check the album or label on the RIAA Radar on my sidebar to be certain.

2.  You can list up to 25 entries. But the idea here isn’t to drive yourself nuts, it’s to have fun.

3.  The order of the entries doesn’t matter. I can’t figure out a good algorithm to make the order of the entries matter.

4.  Enter by dropping a comment to this post or by e-mailing me at ekalett@yahoo.com.

5.  Get the entries to me ASAP. I’m gonna close the rolls when I feel like I’ve gotten a healthy amount of entries.

Reeko by NOFX (Lyrics Of An Old Classic)

Posted: February 27, 2010 by jess in Uncategorized

I haven’t posted in awhile and I was thinking about this blog today while this song was in my head. If you haven’t heard it before I recommend you check out the lyrics below and give it a listen. I’m sure it’s on youtube or somewhere on the web. And if you did notice, yes my author name for this blog is indeed REEKO!

Reeko, try and understand, it really is that bad
It won’t just go away, the party’s over
It’s past two o’clock, so it’s about time
We stopped, ’cause I see the keg has been sucked dry
The cisco was emptied in to the aquarium
The fish all seem to float
The ex lax lines the dog bowl
The toilet’s overflowed, we’ve had our fun so now there’s nothing left to damage.
We got no place left to go
Mr. President, please understand, it really is that bad
It won’t just go away, it’s just beginning
The ballots have been cast, we make like seaward rats
Leave this sinking ship, leave and not look back
The things we never tried to disallow
Have come back to haunt us now
With apple pie and chevrolet
We’ve come to see the end, we’ve all made this bed
Now we got nowhere to lay, dies and gentlemen
Try and understand

MATTHEW PERRYMAN JONES-”Swallow the Sea”

Posted: February 15, 2010 by dillion in Uncategorized

Who is Matthew Perryman Jones? [Insert Chandler reference here.] I’m not sure who he is, being that “Swallow the Sea” is the first album I’ve heard of his. But color me impressed.

The work is very similar, vocally and lyrically, to the work of Ryan Adams, but it lacks the bitterness, the edge, or the irony. Jones is more content to allow the songs to speak for themselves, without inserting an overpowering personality into them. This is much appreciated, because too many songwriters these days seem to feel the need to add something other than the music. Jones’ work is straightforward: Very high quality songs, delicate piano and guitar, drums that hang in the background and provide momentum without force, and above it all, vocals that rise and fall, leading the music that trails just behind them. It’s the kind of traditional songwriting we don’t hear that much of in these days of postpunk and indie rock. Matthew Perryman Jones crafts perfect pop Americana, and has succeeded in writing one of the most thoroughly listenable albums of the year. There are few (if any) weak cuts, and only one cover–his take on “Motherless Child” is novel. I’ve heard the song played as a folk tune, I’ve heard it as a classic rock tune (most notably by Clapton), but I’ve never heard it as a true lament, which it is here–a sad, but hard, take on the traditional. If you like music that puts you in a calm, pensive mood, or music to watch rain to, this album is for you. Produced by Neilson Hubbard (Glenn Phillips, Garrison Starr).

And, above all else, this album should make the listener ask: How the fuck does this guy not have a record deal?

For fans of: Ryan Adams, Bell X1, Coldplay, U2.

Tracks removed at label request.
