That reminds me, Ekko, have you seen your linkthrus return to anything like pre-Hypem 2.0 numbers? I’ve continued using it, but it’s still such an increased pain in the ass, especially as whatever “principles” they’ve acquired seem to preclude posting what the full contents of any blog’s music is. Oh, and being ass-ugly.

Nope. The new machine hates me. I went from regularly being on the top 20 to never being there. Oh well. Hype traffic is just mp3 vultures anyway, mostly, not real music nerds.

That’s not ‘Tears of a Clown’, it’s ‘Tracks of My Tears’.

I don’t think all of us hype machiners are MP3 vultures. I read the blogs and leave comments as well.
I am a music quasi nerd. Has the hype machine started blocking out content? Is that what I am hearing you guys say?

Not so much “blocking” as “only aggregating up to three tracks from any given blog post.” All the tracks continue to be searchable and displayed if you have it list by blog, but default mode is more or less equal real estate no matter how many mp3s are posted. Supposedly that was to give emphasis on the blog text, but that’s kinda counter to the point of an aggregator, and besides, elbo.ws was already doing exactly what they do now, in a format quite similar to the new layout. And HypeM’s staff have more or less gone on record as saying this is how it’s going to be and the gripes of the people who put them on the map are irrelevant, bloggers and readers alike. I’m just waiting for some new aggregator to do what they used to and I’ll stop giving them my biz.
At the end of the day, Ekko is a great blogger with excellent taste, so I’ll get here however need be.

Appreciate the kind words, vjb2. Hype Machine has really forgotten to dance with the one who brung them.

I think the new Hype Machine is ridiculously complicated. It used to be so easy, but now every time I see my favorite blogs (yours included) have been updated, I have to click on the blog name to see what’s up. Sucks.

The thing about Hype Machine is, the new layout is so fucking ugly and confusing. The old, simpler layout gave you tons of info on each page. I don’t like having to click again to see more songs from the pages being shown either ’cause it defeats the purpose of having the page be listed in the first place.
I’ve stopped using it–I just subscribe to your feed, Ekko.
Also, I don’t understand how they pick what’s popular? I mean, who is using their blog radio?

Anthony from Hype here – glad you are talking about this.
We’ve started to show only 3 tracks per post (the rest are expandable by clicking “view more”) so that bloggers get a fair opportunity to be featured on the front page without regard to how many tracks they post.
Some of the other changes on the site are there to change how the audience engages with all this content, so the site has become less atractive for the “mp3 vultures”.
That’s some of our thinking for the new release — you are welcome to write to us or comment here with your thoughts.

I appreciate the focus-on-content message, but I can’t understand why my numbers plummeted so dramatically. And I know I don’t go to Hype Machine to look at content, I go because it is an aggregrator!

Hmmm…I’m still getting lots of hits of my hits from hype machine for which Im greatful but i think that there are now less tracks/posts pre page and therefore you sometimes have to search through about 15 pages of hypem.com until you come across a post you only did an hour ago.
Also whats the deal with time between blogging and appearing on hypem.com? Does it make a difference that we are in different time zones?
November 24, 2007 at 11:44 am |
The worst thing about the new layout is that I cn never find recent updates–I have to go through like 20 pages just to see a few hours. Old layout let me see more on one page–brought me more information more easily. It was waaaaaaaaay more useful.

Another thing in my laundry list of complaints about HypeM 2.0 is how they denote when the blog post in question was posted. They go by “hours ago” up until 23 hours, then everything else is “days ago.” Is it too much to ask that they just put the date and time? It’s how I figure out how far back I need to look since whenever I checked last. This may sound trivial, but it’s yet another item which adds up to a big deficit.
