Time for another reader participation post! I’m looking to find the best cover version of the double-ohs, so far. Is it Jonathan Coulton’s revelatory, “Baby Got Back”? Is it Petra Haden’s brilliant accapella “Don’t Stop Believin’”? It can’t possibly be The Hold Steady’s Led Zeppellin butchery, “Hey Hey What Can I Do?”, which gets the worst-cover-by-a-great-band award from me. . .
Send me a list, via either a comment or by e-mailing me at ekalett(at)yahoo(dot)com, of up to 20 of your picks for best cover song of the century. The rules are:
1. The song must be a recognizable cover (in other words, although Bruce Springsteen wrote “Light of Day,” he did it for Joan Jett, so neither of them could really have “covered” the song).
2. It must have come out after January 1, 2000.
3. It can be a live cover or a studio one, whatever you like.
Bonus:
Everyone who e-mails me at least 10 selections, and provides me with their e-mail address, will be entered into the Swag Bag. Prizes will include . . .
A DVD of Johnny Cash’s 1976 or 1977 Christmas special! Go here for details.
A West Indian Girl CD and T-Shirt
Stevie Ray Vaughn’s, “Solos Sessions and Encores” collection
It’ll be just like you came to the Academy Awards show!
We’ll keep this open until I get about 100 entries, depending on how the voting goes.
Please, spread this around the blogs you read so we get a good sampling of peoples’ preferences! Let’s make this as big (and controversial) as the other times I did poll posts.
25 Best Indie Albums of All Time
Top 10 Ladies of Indie Rock
Top 5 Indie Labels
Here’s a few covers to get you started . . . (But these are not all from this century, so not all eligible.)
I Got You (Split Enz)-Rogue Wave
Miss World (Hole)-Afghan Whigs
It’s Raining Men (Weather Girls)-The Bodybuilder Known As Arnold Schwarzeneggar, B.G. (Before Governor)
All Apologies (Nirvana)-Ben Gibbard
Now start listing!
