THE TOP 10 MODERN SOUNDTRACK SINGLES

Tucked away in the soundtrack to a weird and not-so-hot film, Gates of Hell, is The Pogues doing the theme from “The Good Bad And The Ugly.” Pick up the X-Files T.V. show album and you’ll find the first release of the Foo Fighters’ cover of Gary Numan’s “Down in the Park.” Val Kilmer might not have been the best thing about the Batman franchise, but U2’s “Hold Me Thrill Me” very well might be.

Soundtracks often suck. They’re often lame excuses to re-release crap or let go of stuff that’s been sitting around a studio for a long time, like outtakes, demos, and material that just wasn’t good enough for the album. But sometimes, there’s a single song, maybe two, that pop.

So, we’re going to make a list of the top 10. With your help!

Drop a comment or send an e-mail with your list of up to 10 of your favorite tunes found in soundtracks. We’ll run this for about two weeks or until I get over 100 entries.

I’ve received a few comments/suggestions about this, so here’s the rules:

1. The song should have first appeared on a soundtrack.
2. The song should be a song, not theme music.
3. The soundtrack should have been released post-1980. Just to make it modern. Plus, that means we can include Footloose and Flashdance!
4. The movie cannot have been a musical.

P.S.-If you want some free stuff, include your e-mail with your list. I’ve got quite a few CDs to give away. Details on that will come–watch this blog. Some of the folks who contribute to this list will receive valuable prizes!

Let’s go!

  1. Stu Says:

Not exactly a soundtrack, but I always really liked the Red Hot Chili Peppers cover of Iggy & the Stooges Search and Destroy off of The Beavis and Butthead Experience. I consider it a pseudo-soundtrack to the TV series, so maybe it counts. Come to speak of it, that song has been covered a lot.

  2. Wayne Says:

10 “Bad days” Flaming lips release of this single coincided with their appearance on the Batman Forever soundtrack.
9 “Spin the bottle” Juliana Hatfield’s entry on the Reality Bites soundtrack climbed to No.97 on the Hot 100, I think.
8 “Born slippy” Underworld’s raver from Trainspotting.
7 “Saturday night” Ned’s atomic dustbin’s fab Roller’s cover from So I married an axe murderer. I have the promo for the single.
6 “Kiss me” Some might cringe but Sixpence none the richer’s She’s all that offering was pretty good, and the b-side “Love” was a killer too.
5 “Would” Alice in chains. The Singles soundtrack. Everything off that should have been released.
4 “If you leave” OMD’s new waver from Pretty in pink still rocks.
3 “The ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead” Crash test dummies take on XTC’s classic from Dumb and dumber. Soundtrack also had Freedy Johnson’s “Bad reputation”, another classic.
2 “Nearly lost you” Grunge was king, and Screaming trees proved this on Singles.
1 “There she goes” The La’s wrote one of the best ever and slipped it on the So I married an axe murderer soundtrack as well. Sixpence’s cover was rubbish, though.

  5. andrew Says:

    1. “State of Love and Trust” - Pearl Jam - From the Singles soundtrack, maybe - maybe - my favorite PJ song ever.

    2. “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe” - The Afghan Whigs - Beautiful Girls. Outstanding cover by one of the best bands of the 90s. Or ever.

    3. “Missing Link” - Del tha Funkee Homosapien & Dinosaur Jr. - Judgment Night. What rap rock should sound like.

    4. “Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me” - U2 - Batman Forever. Doesn’t sound like much of their catalog. Was a pretty big hit, if I remember right. One of the few U2 singles I can still listen to, since it wasn’t doomed by overplay.

    5. The entire Backbeat soundtrack.

  6. andrew Says:

    forgot one:

    6. “Miserlou” - Dick Dale - Pulp Fiction. Iconic in its scene, a real gem out of a ton of well-scored Tarantino scenes.

Michael Penn and Aimee Mann-Two Of Us (I Am Sam) the whole soundtrack is great bands doing Beatles covers
Teenage Fanclub -Take The Skinheads Bowling (Bowling For Columbine)
Michael Penn -Macey Day Parade (Godzilla)
Madonna -Beautiful Stranger (Austin Powers The Spy Who Shagged Me) the only Mad-onna track i allow in the house!
Dream Academy-Please Please Let Me Get What I Want (Ferris Beullers Day Off)
Gary Jules -Mad World (Donnie Darko)

  8. Netzhaut Says:

The movie you are referring to is called “Straight to Hell” (directed by Alex “Repoman/Sid & Nancy” Cox and starring Elvis Costello, The Pogues, Joe Strummer, Dennis Hopper, Grace Jones and millions of others. Still, it really, really sucked. Except for the soundtrack which included an earlier recording of “If I Should Fall from Grace with God” than the one found on the eponymous album.

I’d agree with some of Jeff’s suggestions (Colin Hay and Melvina Reynolds - but both songs weren’t written or even recorded especially for the series’ mentioned. But I love the fact that they brought in different artist to record their take on “Little Boxes” from the 2nd season onwards.) and Wayne’s choice of the “So I Married an Axe Murderer” tracks.

So here are some of my favourites (in no particular order):
    1. Still Crazy OST (”The Flame Still Burns” ;)
    2. A Mighty Wind OST (everything! The “This is Spinal Tap OST” doesn’t qualify, does it?)
    3. Peter Gabriel’s version of “The Book of Love” from the “Shall We Dance” OST).
    4. R.E.M. “All the Right Friends” (re-recorded for “Vanilla Sky” ;)
    5. Joshua Radin “Winter” (”Scrubs” ;)
    6. Goo Goo Dolls “Iris” (”City of Angels” ;)
    7. Vic Chesnutt “Yesterday, Tomorrow and Today” (re-recording of “Guilty By Association” with different lyrics for “Crazy” ;)
    8. Don Edwards “Coyotes” (”Grizzly Man” ;)
    9. Joe Strummer “Burning Lights” (”I Hired a Contract Killer”, not released on CD)
    10. Jonathan Richman’s contributions to “There’s Something About Mary”
    11. Michael Stipe & Rain Phoenix “Happiness” (”Happiness”, not released on CD)
    12. The Pogues “If I Should Fall from Grace with God” and “Rake at the Gates of Hell” (”Straight to Hell” ;)

    Ok, that’s more than 10…

    Cheers, Netzhaut

  16. Wayne Says:

Not meaning to steal anybody’s thunder but some chaps have added Radiohead’s “Exit music (for a film)”, but I briefly owned a copy of the Romeo & Juliet s’track and I don’t remember it being there. BUT it was played in the film.

But that soundtrack also had chart hits with Garbage’s “#1 Crush” and the Cardigans’ “Lovefool”. Correct me if I’m wrong. Mundy’s “To you I bestow” was a single in Europe, so that means it counts.

DOH! Can’t believe I missed out one of the classics of the 90’s. Also from Empire Records, “Til I hear it from you”. It was a super hit. I remember the movie being a bust, but MTV played the video. It did well on the charts, even Modern Rock radio liked it. I have the promo single for it. Got it as a 2-for-1 with a promo for the Innocence Mission’s “Bright as yellow”, also from that soundtrack.

Sigur Ros’ “Untitled#4″ was from Vanilla Sky as well, wasn’t it. Don’t have that soundtrack, so someone’s going to have to clarify that choice, because I’ve seen that promo single floating about.

  17. Wayne Says:

    Well done Giovanna.

  19. Wayne Says:

The Darling buds’ “Long day in the universe” was also on So I married an axe murderer. Velocity girl’s “My forgotten favourite” was featured on Clueless, and that was a single on both sides of the Atlantic. Clueless also had Jill Sobule’s “Supermodel”, but I can’t remember if that was an actual single.

  20. Wayne Says:

Another forgotten favourite, Nine Inch Nails “Perfect drug” from Lost Highway.

  21. ack Says:

I can’t think of 9 others off the top of my head, but The Trapeze Swinger by Iron & Wine from In Good Company is list worthy. A nine minute masterpiece. I actually sat through the entire credits as it played.

  22. Eytan Mirsky Says:

    I gotta agree with Jeff!

    1. “(I Just Wanna Be) Your Steve McQueen” by Eytan Mirsky
    2. “American Splendor” by Eytan Mirsky
    3. “Happiness” by Michael Stipe and Rain Phoenix (written by Eytan Mirsky)

Just kidding, really. Love the Jonathan Richman as someone mentioned. Who can really remember all the great ones. I loved that song “I Need You Around” on the tail credits of “Clueless.” I also loved the way they used “Tenderness” by General Public in the last scene of that film, to tell you the truth.
