Hey,

I just read this blog about RA & yeah I think for sure he should of said something, I still really love his music, but not sure if he was cooler when he was getting drunk... Saw he live a while ago & he stood in the dark for 1.30 mins & spook at the end. Nice!

Not entirely true, dude. My real problem with Ryan is that he didn't speak out against the practice, even when he was asked about it. Prosecutorial discretion is not unimilited, either. If RIAA had said they did not want to pursue the charges, the charges would have been dropped. The decision did not even rest entirely with Lost Highway, because they are members of the RIAA and are bound by the decisions of their corporate affiliate in many ways. So, was Ryan responsible for the charges being brought? No. Could Ryan himself have influenced the decision, or at least made it known that he does not believe in throwing his fans in jail over music? Absolutely. That's all I thought he should have done. Several musicians I've interviewed agree with me (and actually, I made the same arguments you made and it was an artist who suggested to me that Ryan was not wholly without blame).

And Prince has specifically directed his lawyers to go after anyone using his stuff without his permission. I don't fault Prince for doing that, but I would never post on him because of it.

I'm both a lawyer and a Ryan Adams fan. (Hey, it can happen.) I read this post and was disturbed. I want to point out to Ryan's fans that he did not, nor could he, have anything to do with the arrest of the teenagers in Florida. It is prosecutorial discretion as to whether or not charges are brought against someone. The decision whether or not to bring charges rested in the hands of the label, Lost Highway - the same label, I might point out, that Ryan is leaving. Feel free to boycott whomever or whatever you please. But make sure that you know exactly who your enemy is. You should be concerned with the record labels - check out the legal history behind Prince cum The Artist Formerly Known as cum Prince again - not necessarily the artist him/herself.

I've felt that way about Ryan Adams too, but I still listen to him. I had no idea about the court cases though... that worries me.
